FACULTY POSITION – PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL/CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY
We invite applications for a professorial position to begin in January 2017 or as soon as
possible thereafter. The deadline for application is 15 January 2016.

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore offers Bachelors,
Masters and Doctoral degrees and stands among the best Geography departments in the
world. Its teaching and research foci are in the areas of Social and Cultural Geographies;
Politics, Economies, and Space; and Tropical Environmental Change. The Department
comprises an international mix of over 30 faculty members; in terms of students, the
department has 300 undergraduate majors and around 50 graduate students. Graduate
student recruitment has expanded over the past few years and the Department continues
to develop research agendas and connections in the global academic arena, while
maintaining a strong commitment to undergraduate education. More widely NUS offers an
enabling environment for scholarship and is ranked top in Asia.

Candidates should be able to provide academic leadership for research and teaching in
Social/Cultural Geography. We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in any
area of Social or Cultural Geography, but we particularly encourage applicants with interests
in age and generation, alternative methodologies (including ‘big data’ and GIS),
development, science and technology studies, socio-natures and biopolitics and bodies,
social or cultural theory, urban studies, postcolonial scholarship and race and ethnicity.
Although experience of researching in/on Asia is not essential, candidates should be able
and willing to develop research projects in the region.

Applicants should have a strong publication record (with evidence of a continuing
trajectory), extensive experience of teaching and graduate student supervision, an
internationally recognised research profile and experience in securing research funding. In
terms of teaching and academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected
to:
a. Contribute to the Department’s internationally recognised research.
b. Teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
c. Perform administrative duties commensurate with a professorial appointment.
Interested candidates should submit their application (including a letter of interest, full
curriculum vitae, and names and contact details of 3 referees) by 15 January 2016.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a campus visit and interview. It is envisaged that
these interviews will take place in the first half of 2016. A very competitive remuneration
package, including medical and subsidised housing benefits, will be offered to successful
candidates.
